It's always funny when people say we ought not to forbid any activity
in church meetings since we can do them in our homes. (Never mind that
they don't take such suggestions to their schools and workplaces).
So, we sleep in our houses too. Can't we just have a sleeping seminar? Where we all come to sleep? Wait upon the Lord for dreams or night visions? After all, He gives His beloved sleep.
We play video games at home? Would it be bad to have a Video Games Sunday where we glorify Jesus in a mortal kombat way? I'm tempted to cite an example of something else we do outside church, but I repent.
There are lots of things we do AS THE CHURCH, in our homes and that's fine. We're still the church when we close meetings. So it just means, when we scatter as a church, in our individual homes we can do all those secular and social activities freely. (Some folks get drunk on movies and sports literally). But when we gather, we know why we gather, right? Hebrew 10:25; 1 Corinthians 14:26. To take our attention off the world and all we busy ourselves with, and to set our mind, will, and affection on Him. Any local church committed this way will help believers break free from extreme devotion to the pleasures of this life, even in their individual spaces. The reason many don't feed on the word and pray is because they've being mastered by these earthly, pleasurable activities. So we don't need to fan that into flames when we gather to edify ourselves.
